Transport

Metroshuttle: a free city centre bus network, links the city's rail and tram stations, main car parks and shopping areas. Buses operate on two routes, Monday-Saturday 7am - 7pm and Sunday 10am - 6pm. Route 1 buses (orange) run on a loop every five minutes from Piccadilly rail station to the heart of the city via Chinatown, Albert Square/Town Hall, Deansgate, Kendals, the Triangle, Arndale Centre, Marks & Spencer and Selfridges. Route 2 buses (green) operate on a loop every ten minutes from Victoria Station to Deansgate, G-Mex, Albert Square, Manchester Art Gallery, Chinatown, University, Oxford Road Station, Castlefield, Marks & Spencer, Arndale Centre, Triangle, Printworks and Urbis.

Rail: Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Victoria are the city's two  main rail stations. They are supported by Oxford Road, Deansgate and Salford Central stations. Tickets are available from staffed stations (cash, cheque and credit cards) or ticket machines (cash only). Call 0845 748 4950 for timetable enquiries.

Bus: The main bus terminal is in the Piccadilly Gardens area in the city centre. Here you can get a bus to any town centre in Greater Manchester. A day saver ticket is good value, as it allows you to travel all day on any bus within Greater Manchester for £3.00. Bus drivers only take cash. For timetable and journey planning enquiries, call the local public transport authority (GMPTE) on +44 (0)161 228 7811.

Tram: Metrolink trams run through Manchester city centre. They also connect the city centre with Altrincham in the south, Bury in the north and Salford Quays and  Eccles in the west. Buy your ticket before boarding the trams, from the machine located at he stop entrance or on the platform. Cash only. Metrolink enquires on +44 (0)161 205 2000.

Coaches: National buses connect Manchester with the rest of the country. National Express operates a nationwide coach service out of the Chorlton Street Bus Station. For timetable enquiries and credit card booking, call +44 (0)8705 808080.

Taxis:  Hackney Cabs (or black cabs) can be hailed in the streets, while private hire (or mini cabs) must be booked in advance.

Car rental: There are a number of car hire companies (including Avis, Hertz, and Budget Rent a Car) at Manchester Airport and in the city centre. You do not need an international driving license to rent a car (as long as your license includes a clear description in English), but you must be 21 and over.

A few tips on driving in the U.K.: Remember to drive on the left. The national speed limit is 30 mph in built up areas and 40 mph - 70 mph on other roads. The motorway speed limit is 70 mph. You must wear seatbelts front and rear. Finally, do not drink and drive -it is very dangerous and there are severe penalties for driving over the limit.

Making a phone call: The code for international calls is 00. Area codes in the UK start with 01 or 02. The area code for Manchester is 0161 and for London 020. A number of organisations provide directory enquiry services, but two of the least expensive are 118 810 (29p per call) and 118 811(30p per call).
