Manchester City Centre

Urbis is a new kind of museum set in a dramatic glass building rising high above the centre of Manchester. The exhibits explore life in different cities around the world. Your visit begins with a one minute sky glide in the MEN Glass elevator. You can then explore the four cascading exhibition floors at your own pace.

The Chinese Arts Centre offers changing contemporary arts exhibitions, workshops, education programme and information on Chinese art and culture. It also has a library and artist database.

Arndale Centre / Market Street Manchester Arndale Centre has a huge selection of exciting shops from leading High Street names to lots of smaller, stylish specialists all under one roof. There are over 50  fashion retailers, 9 shoe shops, 12 sports shops , 10 jewellers and 17 card and gift shops. The Arndale Centre offers over 200 shops which will cater for every shopping need. The first floor takes you up to the new Selfridges and Marks & Spencer's flagship store and a contemporary 800-seater food court -The food chain. Visitors to the Manchester Arndale Centre find that the Centre reflects the "buzz" that is Manchester, particularly during the school holidays when there is always something happening to keep shoppers entertained. Manchester Arndale Centre is open 7 days a week Monday to Saturday 09:00 - 18:00, Sunday 11:00 - 17:00 and Thursday late nights.

Deansgate / King Street / Bridge Street This stretch of designer heaven is a must for the label conscious shopper. The world's top designers gather here to bring the very best in designer fashion and haute couture, including DKNY, Hermes, Giorgio Armani, Vivienne Westwood and Ted Baker. The centrepiece is the recently refurbished Kendals, Manchester's most established and upmarket department store, now with a brand new beauty department specialising in beauty treatments and makeovers for men and women alike. You can shop, pamper yourself and when you have exhausted all the seven floors treat yourself to lunch or a coffee in Kendals' restaurant or cafe.

The Gay Village To be truly transported to a cosmopolitan area of the city reminiscent of Amsterdam, sample pure cafe society in the Canal Street area of the city. Northern Quarter One of the most established and characteristic areas in the city centre, the Northern Quarter provides that out-of-this-world touch to shopping in the city. Royal Exchange Shopping Centre / St Ann's Square This is where laid back shopping is at its finest. The pleasant Shopping Arcades of Barton Arcade, with its fine glass dome and the majestic Royal Exchange Theatre, bring a tranquil calm to the busy city centre. You can stroll leisurely through pleasant, relaxed surroundings and still get the best out of your shopping trip. The area is ideal if you are looking for classical pieces of jewellery. Boodle & Dunthorne and Fraser Hart, two well-established jewellers in the area, sell an extensive range of diamonds, precious stones, platinum, white gold and 22 carat gold. The ideal place to purchase that extra special gift.

 Millennium Quarter / Exchange Square Take the Old Wellington Inn; the city's oldest pub dating back to 1378,  the Printworks; Manchester's 24 hour entertainment complex, and the Triangle Shopping Centre; once the old Corn Exchange. New attractions alongside Marks & Spencer's established flagship store include the long awaited  Selfridges, Manchester's newest park, Cathedral Gardens and the groundbreaking Urbis - the museum of the modern city. One of the most stunning areas of the city centre, where the past and future sit side by side.

Chinatown Chinatown is made up of myriad Far Eastern style restaurants including Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Korean cuisine. The centrepiece of this fine cultural quarter is the majestic Chinese arch built by Peking craftsmen skilled in this fine and rare art. If you're into cooking up your own Eastern delights then the Wing Yip or W H Lung supermarket has all you need for that extra special meal, from chop sticks and bowls to noodles and herbs. With its undeniable uniqueness, Chinatown sees visitors coming from near and far to sample the fine and exquisite dishes on offer.

Castlefield Once stomping ground for the roman army,  the historic area of Castlefield dates back to the year 200 AD, with evidence of the Roman occupation still in existence in the remarkably well preserved fortress in the area. Now one of the most popular areas in the city, Castlefield is graced with charm and sophistication where ancient history meets modern day architecture in the shape of the many bars and restaurants that make up the area. Considered by many to be the hidden jewel in the city centre crown.

Peter's Fields -The Conference Quarter The conference quarter is a newly developed area in city centre Manchester, comprising  first class conference and exhibition facilities which include the new  Manchester International Convention Centre, the spectacular Bridgewater Hall and the vast G-MEX exhibition centre. Great Northern is the hub of this stunning area, providing a huge choice of bars, restaurants, live entertainment venues, a state of art 16 screen multiplex cinema and fashionable shopping situated around one of the city's most stunning open spaces. Peter's Fields is also home to Deansgate Locks, the city's fashionable stretch of cafes, bars and clubs.
